DIY UPGRADES

In the winter, leaving curtains and blinds open helps use winter daylight to help heat one's apartment.

Additionally, adjusting the thermostat can help reduce energy costs by ensuring the apartment is properly heated. In the winter, it can be set to 68° during the day and then lowered at night. In the summer, it can be set higher, around 78° when home and higher when away from the apartment.

An easy way to save on energy bills is to ensure lights are turned off when not in use. Unplugging appliances when not in use also helps prevent energy waste and save on bills.

To make saving energy easier, you can use smart plugs. All you have to do is plug the smart plug into an outlet and then connect it to your Wi-Fi network. Then, you plug a wired appliance, like a lamp or a fan, into your smart plug, and you can now control it on your phone from wherever you are. This way, you can schedule things, like your lights, to only come on during certain times of the day when you're home so they're not wasting energy in the meantime.
